This article was written in the sense of bashing gnome but yet some points seem to be valid. It explains the history of gtk 1 to 4 and the influence of gnome in gtk. I’m not saying gnome is bad here, instead I find this an interesting to read and I’m sharing it.

Not sure about the similarities here, but I actually love GTK when it comes to app design. It’s one of the things I miss about Linux in Windows. (Yes, I’m a Windows user—not by choice, though.) About the only thing I hate about it is that for some reason a lot of GTK app designers think a simpler design should mean less functionality. Gimme my damn right-click context menus dammit! >_<

I swear the same people that complain about Gnome3+ also complain about Wayland.
Both projects put a lot of thought into their controversial decisions, they’re attempting to learn from their mistakes.
There comes a point where you need to adapt to change. And both these projects have proven their changes are beneficial.
Even though it’s partly “old man yelling at clouds”, it’s super interesting to follow. Thanks for sharing!
To clarify: I am also such an old man who misses the pragmatic design paradigms of the GTK2 era. But I am aware that this may simply be due to being “raised” in that era.
Anyway… I am so curious to try out Cosmic DE once it’s released and I hope it will shake up the DE “market”.
Cosmic is basically GNOME in many aspects it seems. They are doing something different, but in my eyes similarly bad in many ways.
They write a completely new GUI framework. That alone could already tackle some of the problems mentioned in the blog post.
Edit: and please don’t confuse the already existing Cosmic Shell with the in-development Cosmic DE.
Yes I also meant Cosmic DE, which is similar to GNOME in many things.
Forking GTK*, and/or forward-porting parts from “the good old days” sounds great in theory, but who’s going to do it? Who’s going to maintain it?
Off the top of my head, the MATE team is growing at a rate of, what, 1 developer a year? All volunteers too.
GNOME (and thus GTK) have hundreds of developers, many of which are paid to work on it. To expect them to stop and wait for us is unreasonable when we’re the ones that chose this path.
I think this quote makes a lot of sense. Btw the author of that shitpost just called that person a “fucking idiot”.
Please delete that post. Interesting history but I am sure there will be a way better perspective to tell it, than this piece of hatespeech garbarge.
