a political crisis that has … damaged its international reputation

I mean… I guess? In today’s climate of openly supporting genocide and disinformation, it feels a bit like being embarrassed you spit your drink on your suit at a party while there’s someone taking a shit in the punch bowl.

Lol dont get your hopes up. The PPP (president’s party) boycotted the vote to impeach the prime minister (aka: acting president) because they claim that the judicial appointments are partisan, therefore the acting president shouldn’t be impeached for not appointing those already approved judges. They vote was 192-0 which would not have passed if it was against the sitting president (they count votes out of the total members of legislators, not showing up is basically a “no” vote), but because the acting president is technically still prime minister, only a simple majority (150 out of 300) was need to impeach.

The US’s opposition party (Democrats) doesn’t even have a simple majority, South Korea’s opposition party has almost 2/3 minus 8 (they have 192 of 300 seats). Completely different scenario.

This is a revenge impeachment on the acting president who took over for Yoon after he was impeached.

        ?

Nah, they (the members of legislature who voted to impeach the prime minister) said he, as acting president, refused to appoint supreme court justices (edit: correction: constitutional court justices) already approved by the legislature, so they impeached him.

What is “revenge” about this? (Unless I missed something)

Supreme court (edit: correction: Constitutional court) needs 2/3 for a quorum, total is 9 seats, they have 6 right now, so if anyone on the court dies, they might have issues trying to convict the president of impeachment.

Not only that, but unless the vacant sheets are filled soon, the justices have to vote unanimously for the impeachment, as it must be two thirds of the seats, not the justices, that need to vote to convict. As there are only six justices out of nine, one dissenting judge is enough to reinstate Yoon.
