For me it feels like breaking up with someone after many years. At the same time, I feel a bit dirty mentioning the name in the post title.
12 years of reddit. It will take some time to adjust but I also switched from google to duckduckgo years ago after decades of google, and then too never looked back. Lemmy does need a LOT of work, still, but so did reddit in the early days…
To those working on Lemmy, please don’t fuck this up for us. Don’t be a spez.
The nice thing about Lemmy that Reddit never had is that it can only improve in ways that the community wants! Not more putting up with asinine decisions from people who only see us as dollar signs.
How is lemmy financed? Someone still needs to pay for servers, right?
Not at all, I’m glad open alternatives are getting attention!
Kinda. But I don’t care about Reddit itself. I care about a few communities and the people there. I know a couple of them are here. But we are scattered and trying to figure out this site.
Time will tell if this sticks or not. I pretty much hope so.
If someone finds a Lemmy equivalent to r/Grimdank or r/40klore please let me know.
Yeah same. I have no real love for Reddit itself, but it has so many subreddits dedicates to very specific interests. They’re so easy to find and they can turn into such a treasure trove of information. I’ll stop using Reddit as my “main” social media, but I’ll probably still use it just for certain subreddits.
I also am looking for a replacement Grimdank. May the Machine God guide us to a new grimdark shitpost repository.
FOUND IT!!! https://lemmy.world/c/grimdank
Reddit peaked like eight or ten years ago. I am so ready for this. I have been doing everything in my power (completely ineffectively) to get the people and communities I care about to bridge to a libre network.
Great, that’s exactly what we should do! Every single one of us can chance the future of Lemmy. At Reddit you were on of millions, it really didn’t matter what you did or didn’t do.
I’ve been waiting for reddits death for ages, so no. The writing has been on the wall for a long time. I actually really like the idea of the fediverse, keeps any singular entity from having too much power.
You would think that but see what happened to E-Mail, the monopolies are slowly creeping in.
Yes, I do. Reddit was a great source for troubleshooting and interesting knowledge. But without the drama and the resulting digital diaspora I would have never found out about lemmy.
Yes, but I also feel like it’s a fresh start. I’ve lurked a lot on Reddit, and am hoping to participate more. And it’ll be interesting to watch a new community and culture develop.
Not at all, I wanted to leave reddit since Tencent bought their shares. Lemmy seems almost ready now. Good enough not to look back.
Of course it was only a matter of time after that before it was ruined.
I view this as a fresh start. Cut off the old and grow a new one. Just like a gecko. I spent a lot of time on reddit but I can’t say I ever actually connected with another person on it, there were just too many people on even the small subs I joined. Maybe lemmy will bring back the small internet forum feel and we’ll actually be able to stand out from the crowd better and actually get to know each other.
Hey RickyRigatoni, nice to meet you :)
Well it sounds kind of stupid but in a way the “never actually connected” part was also comfortable. Like you could just blend in, it was never really about who you are, just about the topics. You could participate while simultaneously blending in with the mass of people around you, and nobody cared about you really. And thaz was nice. That’s one of the things which separated Reddit from other forums.
Not that I don’t also love a sense of community where people recognise each other personally more! I sure hope we can foster that on here. I feel like that’s one of the main strengths of the fediverse.
My main issue is all the useful information that might be gone with a decent chunk of people editing and removing their comments or even subreddits going private
Otherwise, I got perma-banned from Reddit for commenting the navy seal copypasta in a thread where people were clearly sarcastic so I don’t careWhat’s with Reddit permabanning people for something ridiculous? Almost every mod and admin is guilty of using permabans while ignoring temp bans.
Power trips, they seem to be ignoring my appeals too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is just sad to see another good thing, build up collectivly by people in their spare time comes down due to cooperate greed.
I will use reddit as long as the subs I’m mainly engaging in haven’t migrated and as long as there is a secure & a/tracking free way of accessing Reddit, even if it is desktop only
Bit then again I’m happy that truly free and non commercial alternatives get the attention they deserve
I feel just a bit heartbroken but at the same time I really love the concept of lemmy.
I’m just a little afraid that lemmy is just a short-lived alternative and the people go back because not everything is working perfect right now.
Nah
Lemmy feels similar enough
I experienced Reddit taking over BBs, Facebook taking over MySpace, the death of Netlog…so much change and I’m too young to have experienced BBS and Usenet in their prime even
It always expected reddit going to shit at some point. Commercial platform without open standards = pain once management makes poor strategic decisions
Reddit hasn’t really been the same for a long time anyways. I liked the feel of Reddit in the old days better, and this kind of has the same vibe
It has felt pretty toxic more recently. Often I’d see something and end up just leaving to do something else, I’ve been describing it as the “two-minutes hate” internally for a while now.
There are some good communities and I’ve done a good job of trimming what I subscribe to, but that “popular” button is too tempting.
Honestly, mainstream social media as a whole is practically a two minutes hate. There’s a reason why “doomscrolling” is a term. While I do miss the occasional upsetting posts on r/iamatotalpieceofshit or r/facepalm, honestly having them gone for me is better in the long run.
two minutes hate
Very 1984 of you. I should read it again.
The many communities, discussions, and content I very dear and important to me.
Yes, I feel a bit heartbroken. It’s tragic and depressing.
I use the Reddit website on my PC and Relay on mobile. My usage will likely shift, depending on the alternative apps and how the platform develops. I’ve definitely lost trust in the technical and organizational/directing of Reddit. We will see.
I’ve certainly found an alternative / an additional platform in Feddit / Lemmy.
