For me it feels like breaking up with someone after many years. At the same time, I feel a bit dirty mentioning the name in the post title.

I view this as a fresh start. Cut off the old and grow a new one. Just like a gecko. I spent a lot of time on reddit but I can’t say I ever actually connected with another person on it, there were just too many people on even the small subs I joined. Maybe lemmy will bring back the small internet forum feel and we’ll actually be able to stand out from the crowd better and actually get to know each other.

Well it sounds kind of stupid but in a way the “never actually connected” part was also comfortable. Like you could just blend in, it was never really about who you are, just about the topics. You could participate while simultaneously blending in with the mass of people around you, and nobody cared about you really. And thaz was nice. That’s one of the things which separated Reddit from other forums.

Not that I don’t also love a sense of community where people recognise each other personally more! I sure hope we can foster that on here. I feel like that’s one of the main strengths of the fediverse.
