“I only talk to other nerds” basically

The one I referenced there was the Dirtywave discord, highly recommend checking it out, and I think they have a channel for partner servers. The lines forum is also a great community if you’re in that musical space. I couldn’t name a good music discord for lets say traditional genres or general production, the thing I like about what I’ve found is it’s niche. Like once I posted a work in progress and someone active in a scene for the genre I was going for messaged me and we chatted about our approaches and traded some instrument and project files we’d built on the device, all though discord.

So to me I want that type of community, what platform it’s on isn’t really something I care about all that much.

I don’t know of any either and I’m on like 40+ servers probably. I’ve run our weekly dnd on it for years without issue after trying the other options. Get that it’s not good for tracking and documentation in any official capacity but it’s pretty damn good for active niche interest communities.

The music production servers I’m on are a perfect use of the platform IMO. There’s a server run by a guy who manufactures an open source tracker device, and there’s channels where people post works in progress, get help from others, there’s streaming events where people can submit songs they’ve made using the device, etc. There’s a bunch of people popular in the music scene who regularly help noobs. Always ongoing active discussions, everyone is polite, there’s a lot of knowledge shared in real time.

So when people are like “Discord sucks use my favorite platform instead,” I’m just like I don’t even care about the platform I just wanna be where some cool shit is happening and your platforms are fucking boring. Show me the cool servers on your platform then so I actually want to use it. It’s the idea of these platforms people like, and I like it too, my close social group uses a privately hosted Matrix service which I use every day, but I’ve never found a comparable community on these services outside of this use case.

Yeah it’s not actual communism but more like a reflection of the fears of communism in pop culture from the time when it was written in the late 70s. Comment was a bit inprecise but amended.

Star Wars is literally space conservatives rebelling against the galactic communist (1970s US propagandized version of invented communism-fascist aesthetic*) empire…

Firefly is to an even greater degree, like libertarian Browncoats rebelling. I love the fan fic take that the Alliance were the “good guys.”

I found that stage very boring cause they’re basically a slug and it’s the same cycle on repeat, was on parental leave and had way more time to myself than I did just working a normal job. Back to work toddler stage was the most financially draining because of daycare but the government reimbursement program made it very affordable. It’s definitely more fun when they’re able to communicate and have opinions and stuff, and never had a serious problem with behavioral issues. They just can’t regulate their emotions or know what they are really so you have to teach them all that.

I’d say for the most part the downsides I hear from younger people without kids are sort of based on naive anxieties that any new parent goes through. Financial concerns are legit although the US is notoriously bad for supporting new parents. We had 18 months fully paid parental leave to split for example. The real downsides are that it takes more intention and planning to do things, but there’s even an upside to that in that you condense a lot of what you enjoy and use the time way more effectively. It’s like well maybe that thing isn’t really that important, and this other thing really is important. It puts a microscope up to your daily life basically and I think that’s what causes the anxiety for people who envision what having kids is like.

It definitely shakes the snow globe of life up and I wouldn’t even say that’s a good thing for everyone, but also nobody is better or worse because of whether they have kids or not. I hate those remarks parents have sometimes like “oh they don’t have kids so you know” and you can feel that distain and jealousy in their voice.

Yeah I’m all about the spreads, dips, salsas, and chutneys. When I bring bread somewhere I usually do honey butter and something savory like caramelized onion chutney. For healthy can’t go wrong with hummus. Cinnamon date puree and lebneh (tangy yogurt) are also my favorites. Olive oil and balsamic always good as well. Had a mustard seed spread recently which I plan to replicate.

Heard a lot of this growing up like Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, but also Canadians like Lightfoot and Stan Rogers. Lately I’ve enjoyed some of the IWWs compilations of workers’ songs, Utah Philips etc. Phil Ochs is up there too.

My mother’s from an assimilated Mennonite background and it was one of the non-Christian genres that was permissible to her parents, because of the pacifist and civil rights sentiments in a lot of that music at the time. Also it lacked the sex and drugs themes which rock had. “I Aint Marching Anymore” and “Where have all the flowers gone?” I remember hearing quite often.

Control measures are inevitable, like account length requirements, etc. I don’t see any way around that to have a usable usergenerated site. A lot of the previous reddit alternatives were full of racism because of who reddit pissed off on the site, but people like that need an audience and they don’t generate good content. The nerds who do always have to deal with trolls.
