  • I remember one interview I had with a candidate. It was for a database analyst position that required SQL.

The first round was typically a phone screen where I chat with the candidate, get to know them a bit.

Second round was code review. I asked them to do a SQL query that did x.

The queries were simple. The goal was to get the candidate to walk through the query.

I had one candid that, over screen share, wrote the query flawlessly. Then I asked them to explain what it was doing. The candidate froze.

I can get understand getting nervous so I moved onto an insert statement. I had them write one and then do another without using certain terms (often leading to a sub query).

Again, flawless. I asked what situations would you use one over the other.

Again, they froze. I started to get suspicious that they were cheating and had them, instead of typing the answer, say the answer. When they couldn’t, I knew enough that it wasn’t going to work.

  • Anyone else remember the first ad-pocalypse?

Like when OG AdBlock was created and there was an all-out race between individual websites and AdBlock?

Then OG AdBlock sold out and allowed “approved” ads to still show.

We are seeing history repeat. The only reason ads survived was due to increasing number of users who weren’t using adblock.

Now, with market saturation, Google is starting to fight back.

I would absolutely love to see a revitalization on proxy software specifically designed to eliminate ads and tracking. I haven’t looked into this in quite some time but I think we’re crossing into this territory now.

The pessimist in me says to look out for a bill authored by Google to make adblocking illegal.

But the optimist in me says “the Internet sees censorship as damage and routes around it.”

  • See I’d want something similar but for my various online accounts and infrastructure. For example, my family knows Jack about my AWS instances. They’d have to hire someone to make sure that they got shut down.

So a script to set up various items so that upon my death AWS will stop billing would be amazing.

That and to delete my porn, format my drives, and delete my internet history. Actually, just a script to slag the drives would be the best.
