High supply of workers/candidates vs. demand is what makes the pay low.
There are plenty unskilled jobs that are relatively well paid because, for whatever reason, not enough people want to do them.

In my country it is a three years trade apprenticeships and it is shit payed. Also you see the difference between a good and a bad painter very much.
The past tense of pay is paid. Payed is an obscure nautical word.
