This is referred to as “downcycling”, and isn’t limited to content. It happens with lots of stuff.
It’s actually quite common, and, usually, a good way to extend the life of things rather than just throwing them away.
It’s disappointing that the trend is downward. I wanted to type “nuh-uh!” but I’m having trouble thinking of counter examples. Sad.
This isn’t about content, but upcycling is a thing. You can have somewhat fashionable and stylish products made from what would otherwise be waste.
That’s universal entropy for you. Everything will always decays downward, even social constructs and media.
The music industry is rife with this.
