      You’re right, the structure is still there. Their digestive system just got rerouted to another opening.

      It’s a finger/thumb, rectangle/square situation.

      Not all people with a colostomy bag have their anus sewn shut, but everyone with their anus sewn shut have a colostomy bag.

      In cases like having an abdominoperineal resection for colorectal cancer, the rectum is sometimes removed and the anus sewn shut

          It’s often still connected to the ostomy. That would be called a loop stoma (ileo-/colostomy, I don’t know about urostomies tho) the below diagram is a loop colostomy

      I suppose it might be possible to have an injury that results in not having an anus, but it’s not an inherent part of having a colostomy bag.
