Did a whole bunch of right wing money flood into Youtube trying to influence culture? Or am I jumping at shadows?

Suddenly my Youtube ads are all “Real men protect women and wear this tactical hoodie!” and Youtube thinks I want to watch Matt Walsh’s transphobic documentary. Emotionally, it feels like they’re throwing salt in my wounds while I’m just trying to watch my astrophysics Youtubers and escape.

I don’t see ads on YouTube with uBlock origin. However, if you go for more than 8-10 youtube shorts, you will start getting more and more right-wing shorts peppered in.

If you think the ads are bad, just wait until you read the comments under videos… even the most benign of topics has some chucklefuck bringing politics into it. Advertisers know where their target audience spends time, unfortunately.

Comments have been bad for a while. I’ve left three Facebook groups since the election because of hard right unrelated posts and comments. I’m pretty sure it’s due to bots but interesting technical groups became cesspools in less than 24 hours. It reminded me of the end of Usenet.

Yeah, I’ve been meaning to postulate on this.

My feed flooded with topical but conspiratorial videos immediately post-election. Way too noticeable to dismiss without considering.

The bigots and superstitious have won their dominance this month. Money flow and media will reflect that.

I’ll just go ahead and leave a link to https://grayjay.app right here, for ad-free viewing on Android. Requires sideloading or F-Droid, but it’s worth it. Good software.

      Literally nothing that runs natively.

There are two solutions that I can think of:

      1. Watch YouTube videos on your desktop with appropriate ad blockers installed, then airplay the tab to your Apple TV.
      2. get a cheap android tv player and install SmartTubeNext
