        DSL

I did some shenanigans back in the day to fake a local network for my xbox 2001, so we could ‘LAN’ with others over the internet, mostly 2v2 deathmatches. I remember you neede cross-over UTP cables, and we had to learn what that meant. What did your DSL/Dialup switcheroo give you ins PSO and Shenmue? Just regular old multiplayer?? or something like pokemon trading over the link cable?

I did similar for the Xbox lol, and I live in the states, so everything worked fine in both DC games for me.

I was surprised it was that simple, because these days it wouldn’t be as easy. I remember being super safe trying to avoid the save corruption called NOL.

For anyone reading not sure what NOL’ing was:

When the code is enabled, you withdraw a certain item from your bank depending on which slot you want to target. The victim’s character then reloads as one of the game’s NPC characters. NOL is NPC 00, so she was the default chioce and thus became the generic name for all NPC overwriting. The victim would then have to turn off his Dreamcast to avoid having his character destroyed permanently, and doing so would instead cause him to lose all his unequipped items, since he didn’t save.

Auto-save NOLing could either be accomplished by waiting to NOL somebody until he had already entered a teleporter, so that his game would automatically save at the end of the loading screen and destroy his character permanently on its own, or by combining a NOL code with a teleportation code that would forcibly send the victim to another floor after overwriting his data. Once the save is complete, the victim has to delete his character and start over, since his class, level, and inventory are forever replaced by that of the NPC. It was quite common on Oberon, which is why most people would play in locked teams on other ships to hide from the people who used those codes.

Various other codes were also created to improve the efficiency of NOLing other players, such as the “bank reach” code that allowed you to merely face the direction of the bank counter and press the A button to access it, which would allow you to immediately NOL other players after entering a team, instead of having to spend time running from the Hunter’s Guild to the Check Room. Other codes would allow you to load your character data at the Telepipe locations instead of the Hunter’s Guild when joining a team, so that you would be closer to the bank and not have to run as far.

Dunno where op was but in the UK at least it wasn’t possible for the longest time to get the Dreamcast to use a flat rate dial up because Sega did a deal with British Telecom. This made multiplayer pricey af… I know this because my dad was not amused at the £230 phone bill I racked up in the first month of PSO 😅

they’re trying so hard to turn it around. just listen to anything they say nowadays; it either involves calling democrats or leftists weird, or calling what they do normal.

this is why this word is more potent than anything you could say about them. say they’re fascists and draconian, they wear that as a badge of honor. fascists love being feared, fearsomeness is the refuge of the pathetic.

but they can’t handle being called weird. the entire conservative mindset is about how a set of nonsense beliefs and traditions are “normal” and everyone who doesn’t align with that is degenerate. that’s what they’re conserving after all, the “normal”. once that’s turned around and everybody agrees that they’re the weird ones they lose their fucking minds.

so now they’re trying to call everything the democrats do weird. they’re so desperate.

They took “deplorable” as a badge of honor because “deplorable” is a term a high school teacher would use to describe the cool kids who smoke and hang out.

“Weird” is a term the cool kids would use to describe Barbie Bible and her farm boy buddies.

The beauty of this is that we don’t actually have to attack weirdness by calling Republicans weird.

The left can be as weird as it wants, and Republicans can call us weird, we never built our platform on being “normal”.

The only reason we call Republicans “weird” is because their political and social beliefs are fringe nonsense. We’re basically calling them stupid.

They can use the same word against us, but it will never mean “stupid”, it’ll only mean “unique”, and we can embrace that without looking like weirdos.

while i generally agree, I’d argue that calling conservatives weird means less “stupid” and more “creepy”.

it’s not that they’re stupid, though they have a tenuous relationship with reality either due to ignorance or deception…

but they’re fucking creepy sex obsessed weirdos. that’s what weird is about. they’re always thinking about people’s genitals and who’s fucking who, who uses what contraception and what they do with their body. they think about trans people more than trans people think about trans people. they’re fucking creeps.

This sounds like a great way to spend time with your progeny, my sister and I used to do that with Actraiser. She’d do all the city building and answering prayers, and I did all the combat acts.

The family that plays together stays together.

My dad was a city contractor before he retired and several bridges and roads locally built by his company. When he retired he got really listless and started drinking way too much. So I updated his PC to something reasonable and got him a ton of city builders from Simcity2000 all the way to Cities and Skylines II. Completely turned his time around. I mean he still drinks, but a lot less and he and I always have something to talk about.

I was watching youtube yesterday, and some elderly 72 year old gamer actually came up… https://www.youtube.com/c/GrandpaGaming

So definitely. He was also part of the Navy for 20+ years… People like this and walz actually give me a whole new respect for the people in the military honestly. In the past I actually pictured it as incredibly toxic due to someone I met from the Army.

But, at least in the case of the Navy, everyone I’ve met or heard about are so incredibly honorable and respectful… They’re literally normal people

      God yes…

Here in Australia everyone watches the AFL (Aussie Footy).

We had a customer who was a major footy player, and it was obvious he was surrounded by “yes men” his whole life. I watched as everyone around me started laughing at everything he said the moment he stepped in the room…

What he was saying at the time really wasn’t that hilarious honestly…

And it reminds me of the time we got a phone call from danii minogues family to tell us a “special guest” was coming to our store. The room was full of a bunch of nerds. None of us really cared (even if it was Kylie) lol… None of us even recognised her. Even my audio engineer friend who works with good celebrities (like she’s worked with Tim Minchin) just sees them as normal people (and yeah, she’s a gamer)

Yet I guarantee, lots of people super into celebs dislike gamers.
