Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn’t the thing that makes a social media site, it’s the engagement

So even if you’re used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!

If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they’re more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they’ll just go back to reddit

I feel reminded of the old days of the internet. It is invigorating discovering this Fediverse. Everything feels a lot more engaged than Reddit. I think it may be a good thing if this does not “take off” completely.

definitely agree, though the way that lemmy isn’t overseen by a single entity would likely mitigate some of the negative effects in my opinion. but there’s definitely a sweet spot between inactive and dead communities and ones which are too active, in a way i tend to not be a fan of (thinking of mainstream subs like r/funny and r/askreddit’s quality drop). in any case though, if an instance you’re in gets too mainstream for your liking, you can just hop over to a new, smaller instance/community and join local groups they have there for similar interests ¯\(ツ)

Yes, I am intrigued how this will turn out. I think I see potential in the federated approach in this regard.

It’s a bit difficult getting into Lemmy and the feediverse I gotta say. But after looking around for a while I really like how things work here, compared to reddit

I started using Mastodon a couple if years ago; didn’t stay for long but it definitely felt more…friendly than Reddit, or personal I suppose. Glad I found Lemmy though I love the message board/forum format way better than a Twitter like format that Mastodon seems to have, though I do like both

Yea the twitter way of doing it feels more like yelling in a room filled with people, trying to be the loudest. The message board/forum feels more like discussions. But to each his own I guess

Trying hard! What I’d need is a browser extension (Firefox) that just sends me to the fediverse as soon as I type “old.reddit.com” into the address bar to kill some time. Old habits die hard.

I agree. It already helps if you comment under stuff that you liked. Pushes the good content up to the top and it will be more visible for others.

You don’t have to say something genius. As someone who posts memes. I love it when people tell me that they liked it. It helps to push my content up and the more people comment, the more likely you get nice conversations. But nobody will force you to comment, so no panic 😉

Another lurker here. Been well over a decade and this is the first time I feel like contributing again. Really hope the fediverse catches on this time.

Made an account 22 hours ago, been lurking around here and there, finally decided to post my first comment after reading this post. I’d like to get more involved, just trying to find my footing first. Speaking of - what app(s) is everyone using? I’m on Android, and just logged into Jerboa. Decent UI, not a fan of the flashing screen during transitions. Any recommendations on other apps? Thanks.

I’m using Firefox on mobile. A dedicated app would be cool but the web experience is really nice, much better than reddit’s mobile site.

Im too using Firefox (on iOS). Even if it’s not comparable to a native app, it’s quite nice.

Much of the meme content is in the form of GIF and as fare as I see, Lemmy does not support uploading GIFs. Will this format be supported in the near future?

Hmm … that’s all I can see in Firefox… (its fresh install btw.) I have to check the mobile app if it shows up there. But even in the meme communities I only see GIFs sometimes in the comments but not in the posts

I recently noticed that this is actually a bug that’s been fixed four days ago (Github).
Until your instance of Lemmy updates, you’ll have to open the post or comment on the original instance using the rainbow button above the comment. GIFs already work on the same site that you post them on.
