Please, I have been nothing but nice. I have been treated badly by people for working under them. There is a clear hierarchy of power between a boss and an employee.

If they would be working for me there is a clear hierarchy. Being shitty to them on top of that is just cruel.
In this scenario you aren’t their boss, you’re just leaving farts in the bed to ferment and they happened to break the hermetic seal.
