Oh I dont doubt it. Fwiw, (and I’m going go off topic from the architrects behind it, and speak as someone who creates art and reveres it) I remember when it happened that I thought it was unneccessary and overblown drama that in fact annoyed actual gamers. Like, our pass time/hobby/inspiration/artform was used as a vehicle for some politicizing down our collective throats. A square peg for a round hole. (I.e. Idgaf.) Its what turned me off from the whole social justice movements targeting entertainment since. Like I appreciate the intent, but ultimately it was just a bunch of virtue signaling lazy bones riding on coat tails of what would have once been protected as Art. One can do right by others in many ways, but to throw tantrums at Art for being ‘woke’ or not woke enough, I just hate it. I’m a poc and have endured, yet to me, eviscersting creativity to virtue signal is a cowardly low effort tactic. Make something (its hard!) or shut the fuck up and appreciate those that create magic, whether its games or film, whatever it may be.

Ngl, I’m kinda feeling vindicated reading this post. I’d been saying for years to my friend (who doubted me on this) that gamergate started this whole division politics. Making the zeitgeist pendulum swing from one polarity to the other. It led to me-too/cancel culture, which then swung the pendulum towards trump 1.0 fake news and anti vax, then swung to BLM and Lgbqt movements then it finally swung to trump 2.0’s vengeance we’re seeing today.

All this bullshit started from game journalists. Jfc, I miss the uncomplicated days before 2014, when we could all just enjoy TF2 and collect hats without a care in the world of what anyone thought of anything. Hard to imagine our favorite innocent hobby got distorted to lay the groundwork for the divided mess we’re in. And its only going to get cataclysmically worse.

I hear ya, it wast a trip up for me necessarily, I just okayed thru it and it all worked somehow (basically I’m big dumb yes man and it worked out, lol), but i def recall the sign up was more involved due to those extra steps. A potential solution i can see happening is maybe a top youtuber like Linus or MKBHD could ease the pain of onboarding by making a digestible video that effectively goes viral due to their reach. Much like Linus vids on quitting windows for Linux or ditching Google services.

Their logic is from a POV of they dont get the benefit since they aren’t expecting parents or didn’t get that benefit if/when they wer, so why should anyone else. When really the proper evolved response is to be happy that new trends are being set and we’re improving the cruel system that keeps new parents from critically important family time.

Someone ELI5 why Lemmy is or isn’t ready for a Reddit Exodus.

Personally, I want it to be. Reddit censorship/shadowbans/deletes is outta control. Imo the problem lemmy has is on Desktop, since on Android there are some great apps like Boost that give it a Reddit-like end user experience, wheras Desktop experience in a browser is No equivalent of RES, or classic reddit. Opening images is very janky. I like RESs 'view images buttons, that untwirls all view image buttons. Using lemmy on desktop is a Chore. I can handle it. But I imagine its very much a bad taste and an impediment to a greater influx of average users.

Its about time we left reddit behind and make Desktop lemmy more welcoming. The times we’re in requires a trustable platform. Reddit ain’t it.

Idc about ads as much as their duplicitous censoring, shadow banning and shadow deleting posts. You need to recheck your posts in a private tab periodically to see which ones have been censored to the outside world, as they try to dupe the users to believe its still up on their end. Scumbags. Its not a new thing either, but considering how heavy handed they’ve been, I suspect spez will be all too happy to devolve the platform further under this new ‘climate’ we’re all in. Never trust Reddit. I have faith in Lemmy to succeed it. Decentralized platforms are the only way forward for unimpeded free speech.

I dont do tools, or work on cars or anything, but I literally just bought a $20 rachet set with like 50+ pieces, and the one time I use it on my car to remove the battery, I lose the 10mm… I didn’t realize this was so common. I must have spent like an hour in the parking lot looking for it and felt a fool for losing it. This isn’t so much humorous as it is vindication! I am not a fool! Or atleast, we all are.
