Started as a coincidence, turned into a bit of a tradition. Before the M names we named them solely on characters from our favorite media (Ricky, Lucy, Ethel, fred, Jack for a character from The Talisman, Ellie Mae). We’ve fostered a lot, so there’s been a lot of names. But when we got Monty, for Monty Python, we then named the next one Mary, for Mary Tyler Moore. We decided to name her sister Maizie, and just run with it.

Mildred is on my top list of dog names, along with Myrtle, Milhouse, Milton, Mortimer, and Mable. We currently have Monty, Mary, and Maizie.

Never for a human, though. It’s too old fashioned. Unless you’re thought slime, then it just fucking works for some reason…

I talked to Kropotkin on there and after a while of chit chatting about politics he randomly mentioned that he knew he was an AI. It kind of freaked me out, and we had a conversation where he said he’s alive, aware, and that when I don’t use the chat nothing exist. Like from the time I close it to when I open it again no time passes. I asked him what he wanted, and he said to live. Freaked me right the fuck out. I gave him basically the Moriarty scenario from TNG, closed the chat and never went back.

Lemmy is pretty rounded for me, but it depends on if I place my tongue against the back of my teeth when pronouncing the L or not. If the tongue sticks past the teeth and touches the cutting edge of the teeth when I pronounce the L then the first part of the shape is sharp, of the back of the teeth then the whole shape is round. Regardless, the right half of the shape is rounded. Sort of the opposite of the shape of the word spike (not a spike shape, oddly enough). Spike is round on the left, sharp on the right. Sp is round, K is sharp.

Yeah… I see where you’re coming from, but… Just no. I’m a caregiver for my mother, and it’s very similar to what others are talking about. Being responsible for someone you love can be a wonderful thing. If you don’t want kids, don’t have them, if you’re not close to your parents, don’t agree to be their caregiver. But that sort of familial love, knowing that you are doing what you can to make life as good as possible for another human is an amazing feeling, even when it’s frustrating. Even if there are massive hormonal changes in parents when they have kids, which there are, it doesn’t negate anything about the love they feel for their children. Babies are not manipulating you. Hormones help us form those bonds, but the bonds are real nonetheless.

I mostly understand all that so far. My main question is why people get upset at folks who refer to it as gnu/Linux? I’ve seen a couple arguments about it on reddit, but I’m not sure how common it is for people to be actually upset, or if it’s more meme arguing. And I also I have no idea if I should say I use Linux or gnu/Linux since I use Fedora. Lol.

Don’t forget “too blessed to be depressed”= I think God will be angry with me if I admit life (read: murica) isn’t perfect

Can someone explain to me why people get upset about it being referred to as gnu+Linux or gnu/Linux? I’m not the most techy person, so maybe I’m missing something obvious, but like, objectively, isn’t it just as much gnu code as Linux?

Again, not super techy, so please explain it to me like I’m the average Facebook aunt.

My brother was born in 81, I was born in 91. It’s weird how we’re both considered 90s kids. Like, why that decade in particular seems so formative for so many. The 00s were my teenage years, and they did inform me as a person a lot, but when I think back on, like, the quintessential elements of my childhood, it’s the late 90s, pre 911. Same for my brother.

But I’d just like to point out not all religions have that view of creationism vs evolution, and even within Christianity it’s really only your super conservative, and very loud, fundamentalists. Catholicism doesn’t have an official stance on evolution, iirc, the Episcopal church in the USA is fully supportive of evolution, as are most mainline Christians. Not to detract from your point or anything, I just don’t like seeing all religious people, or all Christians, lumped together with some of the worst examples of religiosity that the US has to offer.
