I apologize for the innappropriate behavior and bans by @TheAnonymouseJoker@lemmy.ml in this thread, I’ve removed them as a mod here, banned them, and unbanned the ppl who they innappropriately banned.
Note: if they get unbanned in the near future, its because of our consensus procedure which requires us admins to take a vote.
The classic rebranding ala facebook -> meta / insta, or food companies with their thousands of differently named subsidiaries.
This works if they fly low enough
Dang we really have grown.
They don’t. The genocide and theft of land of their indigenous populations mostly happened less than 150 years ago. That land should be returned to indigenous sovereignty.
How that decolonization should proceed is a question not for the colonizers or their descendents to answer, but the indigenous tribes themselves.
I hadn’t heard of that bug, could you link the github issue?
Few reasons, first is this: . Seems like as long as something has a clean interface, or it looks shiny enough, then all its privacy faults are overlooked.
Apple also seems to intentionally cultivate and sell their products as privacy-friendly, which is clearly not the case (see image above).
2nd reason is that I had an iphone 2g (one of the first models, I forget which one), and it had bluetooth support. An iOS update broke it, and when I reached out to apple, they lied to me and told me my device had no bluetooth module at all. They’re one of the worst offenders of planned obsolescence, and have become one of the richest companies on the planet because of it.
3rd reason: they sell overpriced products to mainly to high-income imperial-core consumers, selling an image of “upper-class professional”. Look at a graph of iOS market share worldwide, vs its market share in the richest countries. Apple didn’t even bother to condescend to make affordable products for the global south.
The markup on iphones is something outrageous, like 40% of the purchase price is going to the shareholders of apple, not the workers who built the phones. By buying apple, you are mainly supporting these wealthy parasites. Its also why other smartphone brands have higher performance at half the cost of iphones. They really bank on the fact that they’re selling an upper-class identity, and less of a phone.
4th reason: Their ecosystem is locked down in such a way as to make it difficult for open source development. iirc apple won’t even let you use the GPL for any app on their app store.
Ask these questions over on lemmygrad or hexbear, you’ll get good answers.
I really recommend asking this question on lemmygrad or hexbear, bc you’ll get really good in-depth answers about the nature and differences between what’s labelled as “democracy” in capitalist countries, vs the reality of whether citizens of a capitalist dictatorship have anything resembling democracy.
YES
They would have burned me as a heretic in the middle ages.
Just like calling someone a “witch” or heretic in the middle ages, a “barbarian”, or “savage”, or “commie” or “pinko” in the 20th century, these terms are less about the actual meaning, and more about a demonization, scapegoating, or a power relation between the dominant class, and a group they seek to malign and rally their people around.
Creating a useful enemy promotes group bonding, unity, a sense of strengthened identity, and self worth.
“Tankie” had a meaning that generally referred to non-pacifist leftists (or those that agreed with using violence to defend socialist projects), but now it just means, “any leftist I don’t like”.
It functions in the exact same way that “commie” did in the the McCarthy era, as a xenophobic and western-supremacist scapegoating of socialist countries, and an internal purging of the working-class communist movement.
It’s additionally useful because it deters people from reading or engaging with the worldwide communist / socialist movement.
If someone uses this term, this is what they’re doing without realizing it:
It’s hard to quantify, but the US instigated or had a hand in causing most of the largest mass-killing events of the twentieth century.
To give just a single example, the CIA was the main driver behind the anti-communist massacres in Indonesia in 1965. 500k-1M people killed.
Or operation Condor, another anti-communist CIA-led program in several latin american countries: about 60-80k people killed, and 400k imprisoned.
A larger list of US atrocities is here.

How does it work? I’d love to not have to buy oat milk anymore, but I’ve never had good results trying to make it at home.
The web dying (i mean web browsers, html, javascript, etc) wouldn’t be such a bad thing imo.
Look at what’s happened to nearly every static content site in the past few years, they’ve become nearly unusable.
News companies can try to convince ppl to use their apps, but everyone else will continue to use social media apps to get most of their news like they already do anyway. Ppl wanting static content can use the minimal protocols like gemini, gopher, or even a simple markdown web browser, which are already better than most news sites.
