As I understood all the land borders of Azerbaijan are still closed, since covid, at least until october - so is there still any train running ? Maybe a deliberate policy to keep out enviro-ngos and ‘hippy traveler’ types who might carry infectious democratic ideas (including to the COP)?
I’ve long dreamed of going from Europe to New Zealand by train and boat, but that route is not currently practical / ethical. ( fwiw, I used to know it well, in more friendly days I organised the ‘climate train to Kyoto’ )
Further south people used the ‘silk road’ route across the Caspian sea - until Azerbaijan closed land borders.

That leaves only the route via Turkey - Iran - Pakistan - India, which is possible (depending your passport and visas) although it’s dodgy across Balochistan. And then, after India, there is also a war in Myanmar. So, can only hope for better times.

I see that says ‘has to be local only, not federated’ (same issue also discussed on github).
‘Local only’ suggests to me front-end, i.e. info stored by browser. In that case people who are often switching devices would have to re-organise on each one, which could be tedious.
So isn’t there something in between local and federated - i.e. saved by the instance as user-settings, but not pushed to other instances?
Maybe there could be some manual copying mechanism, so a user who organises a big set of communities could share with others.
(This reminds me of mastodon ‘lists’ and various ways of organising and transferring them).
Well, I’m developing this interactive model. But only the history is data - which implies past, fixed - it’s a model which calculates the future, in your browser, according to options you choose - the mechanistic dynamic is important for understanding.

This makes sense for mid-latitudes, but the timing of peak power will depend on how much energy the current youth in India and children in central Africa will aspire to use as they get older. That’s hard to ‘predict’ - it’s their choice of development pathway, but hope they don’t follow China’s route with so much cement, steel, roads, there are other options.

Well such timescale would in any case depend on EU, not on convenience for any british parliament. There are now N. Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, [ Bosnia, Serbia, Kosovo ?], Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, [Turkey ?] all in the queue to join EU. On the other hand, it might help from point of view of geographic and economic balance, otherwise the centre of ‘gravity’ will shift even further SE away from Brussels. I think to expand EU has to reform processes, to end all vetos and generalise multi-speed / opt-outs.
Meanwhile a new british government could implement obviously convenient win-win cooperation step by step, until there isn’t so much left to change. And I’d be happy to see Scotland and Northern Ireland take a lead.

Over many years I took my kids by train to see almost every country in europe (all except Moldova, Kosovo, and islands…). Mostly we used inter-rail tickets as kids up to 12 are free. Now they got older it’s more difficult, but a few weeks ago took my family from Wallonie to Catalonia - for 29€ each person, all the way from belgian border to spanish border (with some hours in Paris). Can also get good prices from DB crossing three countries (e.g. Belgium - Italy, or Poland ). It helps to know the routes (use openrailwaymap) and experiment with the options (add ‘via’, change stopover time etc.). Indeed it’s frustrating that every country system is different.
Even if we had low-emissions, low-noise, low-accident cars, there’d still be the concrete jungle surface needed to drive them - and loads of emissions to make the steel and cement of highways.
Although cars carrying four or more people directly to a medium-distance destination can be relatively efficient per pers-km, people buy oversized cars imagining some dream holiday, then use them for daily life on one-person trips that (electric-) bicycles and/or trains could do - car-sharing could help avoid that and solve the EV-range issue (although personally, my dream holidays would be in places with no cars at all).
It’s about future oil and gas expansion (FOGE), what matters to the atmosphere is the total - identifying potential threat. Effectively multiplying FOGE by area (as shown) doesn’t make sense, but neither does FOGE per capita (as most is exported, not consumed locally). I’d suggest just a sized blob for each country - then can show some other dimension with the color.
