They had standard to meet that a vehicle of a certain weight/class must not exceed certain amount of emissions. They made vehicles that didn’t meet that standard, shrugged and put them to market anyway because they knew the profits would outweigh any “punishment” fron the spineless regulatory bodies.

The whoe CAFE standards and the shift in car sizes associated with them should be enough evidence to prove the EPA has failed and become disconnected from its true purposes

At least its not idling in the school parking lot anymore where children are closer to the exhausts and less aware of the risks.

Then we put it in gasoline knowing damn well that the poisionous lead would spew out the exhaust, it took us decades to reverse that decison as well and it only really happened when engine knocking had been resolved.

Why can’t those people park their car on the property they own in the neighborhood instead of the steet?

Maybe those old people could still use the cycle lane if they had decades of exercising their muscles and joints on a bike instead of sitting in traffic in a car.

The lane also provides mobility for people too young to drive, unable to afford to drive, or those who prefer not to drive.

Fuck teenagers who want to get around without their parents though right? Fuck the kids who can safely bike to school though right? The old people can still drive, they didn’t rip out the car lane.

If the community didn’t want them, how did the article manage to find people who use them? Did they drive in from another part of town just to use the bike lane?

Because they didn’t have to pay for that land, the city plows and maintains it, the city repaves it, your partner doesn’t complain when your project car leaves oil stains on the curb. So basically entitlement to public land is what they insist on.

The lanes already exist so in reality I would be using the lanes but my previous comment is the overall sentiment I have.

“Everyone drives here” is such a biased reason for no bike lanes and the fact it connects kids to schools should make this a non protestable issue. Are you able to protest a school bus stop because your neighbours have kids but you don’t?

If I were a cyclist in that neighbourhood I would ride my bike through the no bike lanes signs. If you won’t let me have a lane where else do you expect me to cycle?

As we replace ICE cars with EVs people will think “problem solved” and refuse to fund transit, bike lanes, denser housing. I see the point you are making but I’m worried society’s capitalist attitude will use EVs as an excuse to kick the can of centric planning down the road.

We need to both. We need to bring all urban areas up to walkable standards and make them serviceable by transit. We need to provide EVs for rural people and those who refuse any other mode of transit for whatever reasons.

Just building the same way but with EVs instead of ICEs is still a massive impact on the environment. It wastes vasts amount of valuable urban lands while also being one of the least energy effecient modes of travel.

A big problem IMO is the generational responsibility of the waste as well. There needs to be decades of planning, monitoring and maintaince to ensure waste sites are safe and secure, this can be done but modern political climates can make it difficult.

Also if he kept working, having a job can be enough stimulation and effort for someone to quit smoking.

General rule of thumb I use is try to maintain a following distance that provides enough time to stop if the car in front of me magically stopped dead in its tracks. A car could lose a tire, brake suddenly, roll on its side or many other incidents regardless of emergency automated braking.
