  • It was legitimate in the same way that a dictator’s rule over their people is legitimate or hangings for blasphemy are legitimate. It may be technically written on a piece of paper somewhere, but someone who got less votes becoming president over someone who got more is not representative of a genuinely legitimate democracy.

As long as they’re not shitty mobile games brainwashing the kids with inappropriate and intensely manipulative ads. If you have kids that are playing lots of mobile games, consider keeping them safe from predatory advertisers by installing DNS-level ad-blocking. RethinkDNS is very easy to set up on Android, and while NextDNS is a bit more complicated, it should work on any platform that allows you to set a custom DNS.

  • It’s physically impossible to perform any type of analysis on a low resolution video and end up with a massively* upscaled and accurate result no matter what sort of technology you use. AI just guesses from what it can see and what it’s been trained on. It’s the digital equivalent of hiring an artist to create a higher quality rendition of a picture.

*There are some tricks that can be used to “enhance” images and especially videos, but not so much that it’s like having optical zoom. For example, a bunch of noisy video frames of the same thing can be combined to get a less noisy result.

Reminds me of that crazy scene from Picard where they get holographic popup ads on their ship.

It might just be my crazy conspiracy theory brain, but I feel like they’re trying to normalize advertising in a supposedly idyllic and utopian future society to make us see them as more of a necessity than they actually are. Same thing with Raffi living in poverty and Picard having private ownership of the means of production (his vineyard) with employees. So much for that “money-free socialist utopia.”
