This big issue has been open since April, and the dev has not responded, and his last commit was in early June. Yes, most of this is pure speculation, but 4 months is unmaintained.

In the best case, the software is unmaintained.

Frankly I’m surprised that I couldn’t find any disintegrated SLS flight tests with what happened to Colombia. There was something about Orbiter Integrated Tests but I couldn’t find some sort of itemized record on it.

I refrained from bringing up ancient stuff like Ranger because that’s a much higher R&D milestone to surpass.

Well, I can’t conceive anything other than streaming 4K satellite terrain data that could take up that much data and be nefarious. This is download activity, not upload, so I don’t see it being like a botnet or something.

1. Around April, there was this big thing where a maintainer for XZ Compression included an SSH backdoor in binaries that were only built on release. If a freaking piece of compression software can backdoor SSH, who knows what else is possible.
2. The response to the blob concern is nonsensical, made without their previously-known accounts, and coincides with someone’s claim that they are a close friend and was on vacation to China, the country where the XZ maintainer was from.

I don’t get it; what do you think they’re doing?

1. Okay, I stand corrected, NASA tests probably didn’t disintegrate. But something to consider is that SpaceX has always expected that the pretty early tests would fail as you can see in their statements.
2. The Starship tests didn’t crash either. The first three disintegrated at different points in time and the fourth succeeded (albeit with one engine failure out of 33 and slight damage on reentry).
