Rewatching The Expanse for the nth time. It always cracks me up to see Bobby Draper stuffing those cucumber sandwiches into her face. Do you want some?
Makes sense, in context.
Cucumbers require a lot of water to grow. Bobbie’s a Martian where water isn’t plentiful, so cucumbers would be extremely luxurious there.
I always thought that bit with her and the sandwiches was a nice touch.
I’ve been reading through the books and I’m astounded by just how well the authors have thought through the little details.
I’m also even more impressed with the adaptation to TV now that I’ve read them. The only thing they weren’t able to adapt was the difference in tone and mindset between the perspective characters.
Almost done with the Inaros books, looking forward to the unadapted books.
I’ve been interested in reading the books, but I’m a little weirded out by the tag-team approach by two authors. Would you say that this is noticeable, or that they maintain a consistent quality no matter who is doing the writing?
(Please sell me on reading these.)
I’ve read all nine and I can’t say that I noticed any real differences between the two.
Each chapter in the books is written from a specific character’s perspective. From what I understand, each of the characters was written consistently by one author or the other. So, for instance, all the Naomi chapters would be written by the same person. They may not have stuck 100% to that, but I think that’s how they tried to fit things together.
Thanks!
We only know it’s two people because we’ve been told it is. If we’d not been told, there’s nothing to make you think otherwise.
It’s those little attentions to detail that have spoiled just about all other scifi for me. Another is Mei’s backpack with the 3D dinosaurs. So many little details that other shows would miss. I love it.

Now I need to rewatch that whole show just to hear Drummer and Dawes speak. Their accents are the best!
I saw an interview once with the linguist who helped develop the version of Belter Creole used in the show. It’s fascinating how much attention to detail that show has.
The Belter version of Highway Star was the finest possible soundtrack to the scenes it was in
Oh yes! It’s part of my gym playlist :-) It’s magnificent.
I love the series but its hard for me to rewatch anything anymore, although im sorely tempted by a bunch of stuff.
That reminds me. I should watch it again
Just bought the Blu-ray of the series. I’d only seen the first season and loved it.
I should too.
I couldn’t get past the first two episodes; they were so slow and boring. Were they the worst of the whole thing?
Honestly, the whole first season can be a bit of a slog. It doesn’t really pick up until the storylines converge which is like episode 8.
But, it absolutely pays off with the rest of the series.
Yup. I originally skipped to the last two episodes of season one, after trying to get through the first couple. Then the show was one of my favorites.
Yes. Absolutely yes.
I was in the same boat…could not get into the whole “space cop with fedora”.
Finally after the 3rd or 4th try I got to episode 4 and damn…if that dude didn’t have one of the best storylines, I forgave him for wearing the hat.
The series does have a few loose ends that didn’t make sense, but fwiw it’s a great series to watch…tough out the first couple episodes and you’ll be fine.
The show follows the book series faithfully through the first six books. The loose ends tie into the story arch of the last three books. But I think they ended the show at a really good place because the last arch takes a turn toward the “fantastic” which is still good but feels very different from the rest.
CQB, the third episode is what gets a lot of people hooked.
But it still doesn’t explain much about what’s going on, that takes the whole of season 1, so it varies a lot for people how much they have to push through to get into it.
I was hooked on episode one, the respect for orbital physics with that first flip and burn told me I was in for a ride.
Currently re-listening to the audiobooks. Just started on Calibans War.
I love cucumber sandwiches. Bread, butter, cheese, and some sweet cucumber slices are a hell of a combo.
