They don’t care that they hurt themselves in the process, as long as there’s still someone else they can feel is beneath them. Who they will also somehow be convinced is the root of their problems rather than the policies they’ve voted for, allowing them to play the victim card and continue feeling justified in voting against their own interests to keep others down with them.
