I could be wrong but I read this in a “him being realistic way, not wanting that”. I think he wants reunification but looking at the political environment, he was speaking what he saw as the reality.

Some have suggested this reluctance to talk about the issue masked a desire to pursue re-entry to the customs union or single market during a second Labour term, something other senior figures in the party have failed to rule out. Starmer insisted on Wednesday, however, this was not the case.

Asked whether he could see any circumstances where the UK rejoined the single market or customs union within his lifetime, Starmer said: “No. I don’t think that that is going to happen. I’ve been really clear about not rejoining the EU, the single market or the customs union – or [allowing a] return to freedom of movement.”

I could be wrong but I view this as him and the party not wanting to pursue it at all.

At best, it may be “soft brexit”, where you become a Switzerland or Norway. At worse, you negotiate a few things to facilitate trade and circulation…

Don’t think the EU would allow that anymore.

The UK already had a special position within the EU by having their own coin and not having to play by all the EU rules. It was pretty weird that they wanted to leave in the first place while having such an advantageous spot.

All of what you say is part of rejoinining. I said that at best they would revert to soft brexit (which is not rejoining) Switzerland and Norway are not it the EU.

You are right but I doubt the EU would allow it. They made a pretty big stink about if the UK left they wouldn’t be allowed back on the same terms.

Please don’t. Either join EU and adopt the Euro or don’t. It’s already bad enough that countries like Switzerland are allowed to benefit that nich from EU when they shaft the whole continent with their tax/wealth haven.

Nobody is letting them rejoin until they have a referendum with a decisive margin of victory and that will take decades, particularly with Nigel Farage agitating for little britain.
