    It’s honestly not so much a genre as a playstyle.

    The focus is more on session-based gameplay. You go in, win/lose and start another run. Most roguelikes will give you permanent upgrades for success in a session that will make subsequent runs somewhat easier.

    That being said, the exact ruleset can vary a lot even among games that explicitly market themselves as roguelike.

      FFS my current game is a rogue-like and I never would have known this, despite literally looking up the definition earlier today.
