Master and Commander is downright lean; O’Brian might not have anticipated demand for a sequel. Post Captain feels like a wee retcon, and it reconfigures some key ingredients to make the whole thing a little more sustainable as a series.

*H.M.S. Suprise" is able to blast out of the gate with all that groundwork, and the series never really stops.
