I use an RPi 4B for HAOS. My little SD card was filling up, so on advice from folks here I got a nice cheap external 128GB SSD with USB interface. Literally all I had to do was install the generic HAOS image on the SSD using Pi Imager, remove the SD card and plug in the SSD, wait for it to come up (~5 min), restore the backup as the first thing when the web UI appears, and wait about 10 min for the backup to finish restoring. It was 100% back where I left it. And SOOO much faster! Totally recommended. I didn’t have to do the eeprom boot thing; the RPi just booted straight off the USB.
