Summary

In Wayne County, Arab American precincts rejected Kamala Harris, with Biden receiving 82% of the vote in 2020 and Harris only 23% in 2024.

Trump’s outreach to Arab American and Muslim communities, including visits to Dearborn and Hamtramck, contributed to his increased support.

Harris’s performance in Dearborn, where she received only 13% of the vote in the south end, reflects the backlash against Biden’s handling of foreign policy in the Middle East.

they only care about themselves, and their misguided belief that they are ‘doing the right thing’ and ‘paying back’ biden.

if they cared at all about gaza, about the west bank, about palestine and its people, they would have come out in force, and in support of democrats from coast to coast. anything to prevent another trump presidency.

trump was never on their side and will let israel do whatever they want.

just like he’ll let russia do whatever they want and ukraine will cease to exist. protest votes, like those in michigan, helped doom ukraine, too.

Agreed on all but one point:

Ukraine won’t cease to exist. They’ll just fulfill their threat to execute a crash nuclear weapons development program, if that truly becomes their only option.

Or maybe too many people in this thread think they know better about the average voter. Most Americans don’t actually give a shit about politics. It’s getting them to care is the problem. Most people in the USA are too fucking stupid for their own good. Most of the people in this thread are too sensitive to realize they are part of the problem. Arab Americans aren’t directly responsible for Trump’s win but they contributed to it by holding out their votes on a single issue. If both candidates were literally the same as each other besides their stance on Gaza then I can see the logic of not voting for one over the other or abstaining. This was not the case. Most of you trying to act like Harris should have come out and promise to personally stop the genocide don’t realize that the Jewish population in America controls more money, power and influence than the Arab vote. So both sides are going to go out of their way to support Israel. You pearl clutchers don’t get this.

Let’s not stop the genocide, instead let’s advocate for lil genocide. It’s a compromise with BIG genocide. Oh no, that plan didn’t work, the people who wanted genocide voted for big genocide. And the people who wanted no genocide didn’t vote. Damn those no genocide voters, don’t they know that a lil genocide is better than big genocide?

I will learn nothing from this and do it again.

Weird how repeatedly calling for an immediate cease fire and a two state solution in Israel = “lil genocide”.

              March - https://www.npr.org/2024/03/04/1234822836/kamala-harris-benny-gantz-gaza-cease-fire-israel-hamas

“Monday’s meeting in Washington, D.C., comes one day after Harris called for an immediate, temporary cease-fire in Gaza to facilitate an exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners and detainees. Harris is expected to continue pressing Israel to pause the fighting and allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza.”

              July - https://www.politico.com/news/2024/07/25/harris-netanyahu-israel-cease-fire-00171315

“Vice President Kamala Harris met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in private Thursday and followed it with a strikingly forceful call on his government to get a cease-fire deal done and ease the suffering of civilians in Gaza.”

              September - https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/harris-trump-presidential-debate-election-2024/card/harris-calls-for-ceasefire-in-gaza-while-trump-claims-she-hates-israel--isokhfqmy6EgRGrUOSuK

“Vice President Kamala Harris reiterated her call for a ceasefire-for-hostage deal in Gaza while expressing sympathy for both Israelis and Palestinians affected by the conflict. Harris condemned the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel but said “far too many innocent Palestinians have been killed” by Israel’s ongoing military offensive in Gaza.”

Do you get something out of mis-representing what she said and did? Or were you just not actually paying attention?

Immediate ceasefire was also Biden’s publicly stated position. While he was sending 2,000 pound bombs. Which are not a defensive weapon in any military’s playbook.

And US law doesn’t distinguish. All military aid should have stopped the minute USAID made the determination that Israel was withholding food from Gaza. Both the Foreign Assistance Act and the Leahy Law make this clear. And this is after the mountains of evidence that Israel was systematically bombing concentrations of IDPs and aid workers, and using Palestinians as human shields. Any one of which would have shut off military aid to any other country.

So you have the Vice President saying the same thing as her President while he’s violating the law to fund a genocide. This isn’t shocking. The Arab Americans in Michigan are human. Expecting them to vote for the person who won’t make herself meaningfully different on the issue is a fools errand. It doesn’t get worse from their point of view, there is no super genocide.

They send Israel weapons to defend themselves from attack by hostile forces. Israel has the right to do that.

If you want to blame Netanyahu for misappropriating defense supplies, that’s absolutely fair, but that’s NOT why Israel is being supplied.

                  https://www.npr.org/2024/08/23/g-s1-19232/kamala-harris-israel-gaza-dnc

“Let me be clear, I will always stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself and I will always ensure Israel has the ability to defend itself,” she said tonight. She said that Israelis should “never again” go through the horror and “unspeakable” attacks of Oct. 7.

“At the same time what has happened in Gaza in the past 10 months is devastating. So many innocent lives lost. The scale of suffering is heartbreaking,”

None of this is supporting genocide in any way, shape, or form. If you believe it is, please supply a source showing Biden or Harris giving free reign for Israel to do what they want.

                  You know, like this:

                  https://apnews.com/article/trump-biden-israel-pr-hugh-hewitt-21faee332d95fec99652c112fbdcd35d

“They’re losing the PR war. They’re losing it big. But they’ve got to finish what they started, and they’ve got to finish it fast, and we have to get on with life.”

Pointing out uncommitted and 3rd party voters are just as much to blame for trump regaining office as liberal democrats are isn’t not the same thing as responding to “fuck nazis” with “fuck nazis and communists.” One is expressing an opinion which gives away your character while the other one points out the roles both groups made. You may not like it, but defaulting to not voting for either of the two parties in a 2-party system doesn’t make you innocent of the fact that the worst elect won in part because of a choice you and many others made. The lib politicians and leaders are assholes, but they were miles better than trump. But I guess you’re thinking otherwise with the way you throw “liberal” around like an insult to everyone you disagree with.

I’ll feel bad, along with when they come for all the other immigrant groups who voted for Trump, and eventually for the rest of us.

Now is the time to build coalitions, and work together to confront what is coming.

We keep talking about how to “get through” to voters…

Well, cold reality is a very effective tool, and many people will be regretting their choices in the coming days. We’d be stupid to turn them away instead of showing them we believe in the same core values.

Harris refused to take a stand against Israel so why should they vote for her?

Why are they selfish? Because they didn’t vote how YOU wanted? Who’s being selfish here?

Oh yea, because Trump’s definitely gonna take a stand against Israel and TOTALLY won’t give them a blank check and encourage genocide. Nope.

At least we didn’t give that blUe MagA the Trifecta! We did it Lemmy!

            “A non-vote is a vote for Trump”

Trump did not gain a whole lot of raw votes compared to 2020. Last I saw he had figures of a net gain of ~500k

Harris fell 4 million short. If you didn’t vote because of some stupid protest, you voted for Trump. Netanyahu publicly wanted Trump to win.

AFAIC, every protest-voter, every third-party voter, every “BlUe MAgA” screecher is a MAGAt who directly contributed to this shit show we’re about to have.

Let’s see how many more elections y’all gotta lose before you learn. Or maybe y’all lost the big one because you just couldn’t stop yourselfs from begging for leftist votes you couldnt compromise with.

Except it’s not even you. Your just a random dude body blocking for a billion dollar campaign. Human being to human being here, why can’t you blame the DNC? Genuinely? They ran the election, they got the polls, they knew what was popular and what they would win votes with but we’re unwilling to do it and gambled on a different strategy. Is that not their fault?

why can’t you blame the DNC?

Oh I do, but they are not 100% here, in all likelihood MAGA would have fallen apart had he lost and then we could have had our hand ringing and protest votes and all that for 4 years. Giving the Rs the senate and house would have been preferable to a Trump presidency if you wanted to protest something.

I fully agree with you. And I took voted harris just to be clear. But you believe the Dems could of won with the leftist vote that sat out. The Dems were also aware of that due to the large uncommitted movement. Is that not enough to blame the dems for never shifting any position leftward to capture and motivate that base? Why does your final blame, the one that has you here arguing with presumably like minded allies for the upcoming fascist regime rather than joining in blaming the DNC in hopes that that pressure will cause them to not try the same “fuck the left” strategy they have now lost 2 elections with trump over.

Oh cause that is really going to help things. That’s such a stupid stance to take. It’s a complete abdication of any agency or power they have as voters. In this election a non-vote was a vote for Trump cause most likely non-voters were the pearl clutching centrist democrats who were literally one-issue voters. One-issue voters are pathetic and stupid.

Too many people in this thread think they know better about the average voter.

You want to consider both sides the same when they are not. Are Democrats perfect? No. Are they a better alternative? Yes. Setting aside the ongoing issue of Israel and Palestine and whether or not either state should exist (Hint: it’s likely neither, but Israel does have a more historical claim), the issue WITHIN AMERICA is that Trump and his cronies want to install a slew of right wing fascists into positions of power WITHIN AMERICA. Yet stupid assholes like you want to concern yourself with whats going on in a foreign country when shit is going bad right here. Get your head out of your ass.

              No.

And no, having left an area 2,000 years ago does not give you the right to genocide the people who stayed.

Go read about it then. Sorry not sorry that Jews, Egyptians, Italians, French and English have a greater claim to the area than any Arab speaking peoples, Palestinian or otherwise. If you want to ignore history then just shut the fuck up.

“Voting 3rd party or sitting out during the election basically cedes the election to one of two parties. We should at least choose the party that has a better chance to be swayed against genocide than the one who openly advocates for the genociders to ‘finish the job’”

          “L1b3RaL!!1!a”

I’m not saying liberals are the smartest and most moral people, they definitely aren’t. But dismissing reality of the American political system and the almost certain likelihood of the US presidential election to vote for neither of the two main parties and expecting something good to come out of it is pretty telling to one’s critical thinking skills.

Welcome to the reality of politics. Don’t like it? You have a few options: Get involved in activism, or run for office yourself by starting at the local level and work your way up. Want a formidable 3rd left-leaning party? Bolster the numbers of SPUSA, SPA, or any other ones that flew under the radar. We can also organize ways to kick the milquetoast centrists and moderate-right out of the democratic party. Hell, I wouldn’t be opposed to muddying the waters among Republicans since there’s already a lot of pushback regarding trumps choices for cabinet members and such.

Whining about every problems without finding solutions makes you sound immature and pathetic. If it really bothers you, action speaks louder than words. Do something about it.
