A school building was built in 1935 and a new shop and warehouse the following year. Later, a 180 m² fish house was also built, as fishing in Kangeq was flourishing. From 1950, Kangeq belonged to the new municipality of Nuuk. The population increased to 155 people by 1960. From the 1960s onwards, the population began to migrate to Nuuk. Nevertheless, a workshop was built in 1962 and a telephone station in 1967. On 1 May 1974, the village was finally officially abandoned and the inhabitants moved to Nuuk. Since 1980, Kangeq has been listed in the statistics as uninhabited.
The reasons might have been the same as usual for urbanisation, e.g. better paid and easier work than fishing or more cultural events.
