When placing a Framework 13 on top of another Framework 13 laptop, the screen will turn off. How come?

I wonder if it’s detecting a magnet at the front edge from the closed lid of the notebook underneath, telling the system on top that the lid is closed?

The magnet on my watch band makes my Framework 13 go to sleep sometimes. It was so annoying I got a different band.

weird, the laptops I’ve seen have magnets on the palmrest instead of the bezel, I guess it’s just reversed on the framework?

The sensor that recognizes if the laptop is closed sits on the left, next to the audio jack. If you get a magnet within 2-3 cm of it, it triggers and the screen turns off. Seems like the magnet in the lid of the other laptop is just close enough.

Yep, there’s a hall-effect sensor in there. My watch band does the same thing to several laptops. Pretty annoying but not really a problem.

Happens with other laptops i have too. Figuring a magnet or something in the bottom laptop is triggering the top one to think the lid is closed.

Seems to me that it is likely due to the magnets on the hinge of the bottom laptop connecting with the bottom part of the top laptop. The top laptop then treats it as if the lid is closed.

That make sense. I never knew that’s how a laptop knew the lid was closed. TIL!

🧲, my Samsung tablet does the same thing when flipping the magnetic lid around the back. The screen shuts off and it’s annoying and it’s the official cover.
