Explanation: In the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, three legions (~15,000 soldiers) were ambushed and slaughtered by Germanic tribes. This was largely due to the incompetence of the Roman commander in charge, Quinctilius Varus, who died in the course of the battle. Emperor Augustus was so distraught over this massive loss of trained men that he was said to wander the halls of his palace even years later, crying, “QUINCTILIUS VARUS, GIVE ME BACK MY LEGIONS!”

Caesar ain’t lookin’ for a boyfriend or a girlfriend here. He just wants his goddamn legions!

      *Teutoburg
AfaIk, Varus committed suicide, along with other high ranked officers, to be not taken as prisoner, so died in the battle does not completely reflect the truth.

23 or 25, and already low on manpower at the time. Augustus just a few years before had to resort to conscription to refill the ranks due to losses in the Balkans, so it’s likely that you were already looking at some of them being understrength.

Arminius was just afraid of baths.

Is there like a barbarianboo community somewhere? I feel like there’s been a recent spike in counter-jerk.

It would be nice for them to have a community too, but they’re absolutely welcome here as long as they’re on topic (even if on the wrong side of the topic, filthy barbarians) and in the (light-hearted) spirit of the community!

Yeah, no hate (well, except as a LOYAL ROMAN CITIZEN). I was more thinking that things could be expanding. I bet there’s a subr*ddit for every reasonably well-known ancient world culture.

Part of the issue is that historylemmy is a little understaffed at the moment. As more activity spins up, specific communities will become more viable!
