The right-wing Supreme Court majority recently approved a power grab by big corporate special interests who’ve been moving to strip federal agencies of their authority to regulate for a clean environment, food safety, and workplace protections. This radical new Supreme Court ruling has gutted the 40-year legal precedent known as Chevron deference, undermining the federal government’s ability to enforce protections mandated by laws enacted by Congress. This is a huge deal. The scope of this decision is breathtaking and calls into question literally thousands of regulations that support Americans’ quality of life in every sphere touched by congressional legislation. It’s a decision that paves the way for Trump’s despotic Project 2025, if he is elected, to quickly and easily rip away protections from Americans in every sphere, to further boost corporation profits and power. This is why Progressive Caucus Chair Rep. Pramila Jayapal has introduced the Stop Corporate Capture Act (SCCA) to codify the Chevron deference, recognizing that judges are not policy experts and that it is entirely appropriate for knowledgeable regulatory agencies to respond effectively to protect Americans. The Stop Corporate Capture Act will curb the influence of lobbyists and corporate interests by: Establishing Rulemaking Transparency: Requires public disclosure of the sources of funding for studies used in rulemaking, as well as explanations of any changes or elimination of proposed rules. Eliminating Industry-Backed Delays: Limits judicial interference with public interest rules and accelerates the rulemaking review process. Empowering the Public to Hold Agencies Accountable: Fines corporations for lying about the costs of public interest rules to shareholders, establishes an Office of the Public Advocate, and enables citizens to sue corporations that violate the rules and agencies that fail to enforce the laws. For decades, big business has fought to cut off the ability of federal agencies to protect Americans’ health and safety.
