I’m using a Roland AE-20 to play parts that , in the past, I would have used a MIDI keyboard. For monophonic instrument parts the AE-20 is vastly superior. If you look at the violin part in the Cubase project below, you can see how much shape/expression there is to the sounds. This happens automatically when I use the AE-20, as opposed the the blocky on/off sounds using a keyboard. Much more natural sound, with no editing of MIDI data after the fact. In fact, I just record the audio DI out from the AE-20, skipping MIDI entirely.

You can hear the results on this recording of “Faroe Wind”. The violin comes in on measure 17. The other instruments are acoustic. Link:
