Hey y’all,

I strongly want to learn Cantonese at some point. But ideally, this year, I would focus on my career more and learn Cantonese down the road.

However, I’m in the U.S. and lucky to have a community college in my region that has four affordable Cantonese courses, which are beginner 1, beginner 2, intermediate 1 and intermediate 2. Each is a semester long.

Moreover, the community college is cutting a lot of classes, so it might not teach Cantonese anymore in the coming years. And more importantly, I’m tempted to sign up to capitalize on a cheap, structured Cantonese class, especially given how difficult it seems to find structured affordable Cantonese courses — and how tough it seems to find a good course online.

However, I would only be able to take one semester before I leave the region.

So, here’s the question:

Would taking a semester of a Cantonese class as a jumping point give me a substantial leg up if I were to continue learning it via less structured resources online? Or would it not achieve much that I couldn’t do online?

For example, would having a one-semester foundation in a Cantonese class be a substantial boost in helping me learn the rest via Pimsleur, online tutors and iTalki?

I appreciate any time any of y’all provide. Thank you in advance.
