My wisdom:
- “The United States of America” is not a name but a description
- It’s a bad description since there’s multiple unions of states in america
Tell that to Austria - Österreich. That means “Eastern realm”, since there are no countries more to the East of anything than them. Or hell, Iceland. And Niger is named after the river Niger, which might come from ger-n-ger meaning “river of rivers”, so that’s another wonderfully unambiguous name.
I’m sure there are other great examples.
Deutschland (Germany) means “land of the people” :D
Meanwhile Czech name for Germans is “Němci”, which means “Those who can’t speak”, as compared to Slavs (Slovani) which is “Those who can speak”.
Åland (a region of Finland) means “land of rivers”. The are no rivers there
When you have a dream and a corrupt cartographer
It’s funny because our neighbor is also literally called United States, Estados Unidos Mexicanos.
Yup that’s why I made this post :D

From 1968 Brazil is not United States anymore, we are a Federative Republic.
Isn’t a federation a union of states?
