Was this always happening in this big scope? Leaks of games, data that is stolen, all these breaches in big companies. Feels like I see this everyday

    It used to be worse in a few ways, but it’s now also worse in other ways.

    • In the 90s and early 2000s it was very common that little script kiddies where able to breach the security of banks, because IT security really wasn’t a thing back then. All our modern security systems where just evolving at that time.
    • Widespread reporting data breaches is only a rather recent thing. Regulation that carries significant fines for not reporting data has only emerged over the last decade.
    • Higher internet usage leads to more leaks. If there are 10x more users and services, you can expect 10x the amount of leaks.
    • More people using more services multipy the dangers of e.g. password reuse.
    • Increased digitalization leads to higher risks when attacks are successful. If your internet usage is email and that’s it, a breach doesn’t do much. But if your bank, your job and your entire life is online, a breach hurts much more.
    • Social Engineering works exactly as well today as it did in the 70s. That’s what most attackers use, because IT security rises, but human security is as bad as ever. Again, more employees of more companies leads to more people vulnerable to social engineering.
