Been watching DS9 Season two and have been very impressed with the quality. I remembered it being “pretty good” but in my memory it was "the season with “The Circle” trilogy, “Melora”, “Rivals” and “The Maquis”, episodes and story lines that never really did it for me. I think that made me forget how many really good one-off episodes were also here, to name a few:
- “Necessary Evil”
- “Rules of Acquisition”
- “The Alternate”
- “Armageddon Game”
- “Whispers”
- “Paradise”
- “Shadowplay”
All bangers!
Also I love how this season ever so slowly drip-drops dominion references culminating with the season finale “The Jem Hadar”
Hell ya! One of Quark’s finest scenes:
They have weapons. You have weapons. Everyone has weapons. But right now, no one has a clear advantage. So the price of peace is at an all-time low. This is the perfect time to sit down and hammer out an agreement. Don’t you get it? Attacking the Cardassians now will only escalate the conflict and make peace more expensive in the long run. Now, I ask you, is that logical?
I love the moments when it’s demonstrated that Ferengi can be actually very astute when it comes to diplomacy/interplanetary relations… their culture just has a completely different set of values.
One of the best things about DS9 season 2 is the little hints about the Dominion that they drop here and there. Really adds an ominous feeling and makes their introduction hit so right. Then of course, “The Jem’Hadar” is one of my favorite episodes.
I like the Circle trilogy - the Bajoran government being unstable is a fun element to those early seasons.
It’s a shame Shakaar was such a dud of a character, and the series sort of lost interest in the Bajoran civilian government as the Dominion and Kai Winn started to take up all the oxygen in the series.
Yeah it’s certainly not the worst series of episodes and as you implied it does some good world building. It just doesn’t do it for me the same way that “why is everyone treating O’Brien like he’s shady?” does.
My favorite ds9 episode is all of them that don’t have major Kira make out noises.
Yucks me out.
Seriously what is up with trek make out noises. It’s like disgusting nails on a slimy chalkboard.
