I was looking for a fly fishing community and saw there wasn’t one. I tried to make one and it it tells me there is already one made. I search for it agian and the search comes up blank again. What is going on?
Someone created c/flyfishishing in the past and then deleted it. Lemmy does now allow deleted community names to be reused, unfortunately.
The simplest route is to pick a different community name. Or, post your flyfishing content to !fishing@lemmy.world or !fishing@lemmy.ca. Both of those communities could use some new life.
I think this needs to be changed or a github ticket put in requesting the change, so that if a community had been deleted for a certain amount of time, the name can be reused by someone who wants to run the community. Otherwise, it can get very annoying rather quickly when you are trying to create a new community and the name you want to use it won’t go through. This is just my opinion on this.
Can communities be private and hidden maybe?
If it is private and hidden it makes it impossible to join.
Yesser, but then you wouldn’t be able to create a public version of the same community.
