I’ve been continuing my leatherworking and I made some glasses cases! They are pretty quick to make so feel quite nice to maybe make as gifts.

Thank you! I started early in March so just under 2 months now. I make a lot of my own patterns too, but this was somebody else’s pattern, once I get an idea of how the construction works I then like to draft my own so I’ll likely work on my own pattern for them soon.
I’m working my way up to bigger items as I accumulate more tools, hardware and skills. I’d love to make a bag but I’ve mostly been using offcuts up until now which have been ideal for making bracelets and accessories.
It’s really impressive mate, I’d pay money for it in a shop. I can’t wait to see where you go with it!
Thats really kind of you to say. I’d actually love to have a brand and store of my own as a side hustle one day, my artist friend has already agreed to swap me a logo for a choker! I’m really enjoying it still, so many things to learn.

Looks fantastic and professionally done. I really struggled with the hardware elements of my latest project. Can I ask what you used to secure it? I have one of the hand press tools but I can’t fully depress it 😭
Thank you! These were all done with manual setters, the little anvils and rods and a hefty rawhide hammer. I’d love to invest in one of those big lever presses, I live in terror of mashing a rivet or snap and not being able to remove it.
I should have gone the hammer route. Mine is a very small press that fits in your hand and I don’t have the grip strength. Idk who would lol.
I totally get the concern. I did the hardware on my latest project first for that exact reason 😅 I almost ruined an entire piece because I messed up a grommet and decided never again lol
Yeah, i decided against those as when buying cheap its at least hard to make a bad lump of metal vs a more intricate tool. The manual setters are at least cheap but I was having a look at the bigger lever machines and they are more reasonably priced than I had assumed so may invest in one soon.
I just picked up crochet for the first time. I got a starter kit recently but didn’t realize it’s at an intermediate level 🫣 I still don’t quite have the hang of it, but I’m glad I’ve branched out and am proud of myself for sticking to it.
That’s great! I’ve never managed to crochet its just too tricky for me. How are you finding it?
The basic stitches are fine but I’m having difficultly finding people who break the more complicated ones down to the level I need it. I’ll get to a place where I think I’m doing it right but it’s clearly not once I get some stitches in and I don’t quite know what I’ve done wrong yet. I don’t have anyone irl who crochets so I feel like I’m lacking the kind of generational knowledge that would easily be able to point out what I’m doing wrong. I’m still learning so it’s to be expected and I haven’t gone too deep into YouTube tutorials just yet so we’ll see how it goes. In my opinion it’s nicer than sewing because the setup is nonexistent and it doesn’t require as much of my full attention. I can’t watch videos while sewing only listen to them but I’m finding myself able to crochet while watching things. It also feels a lot more personal. I’ve made sewn gifts for friends and even though I spent a lot of time picking out the fabrics and hardware and finishings, there something that feels different when every stitch of the fabric itself was done by you.
Yep, I love hand made gifts like that they’re so personal. My friend made me a mini knitted toy years ago and I still have it! Have you looked into knitting and crochet groups in your area? There’s often a few.

I have not looked into groups yet. I’m still pretty new to it and I’m involved in a lot of groups already just none that are craft related. I don’t think I’d have time for another group and I’d feel guilty just showing up for one meeting and asking for help and potentially never going back lol. I figure I’ll keep at it for a bit longer before trying that route. Thank you for the suggestion though!
Yep that’s the problem, you’ve got to find the time to go at a fixed time and account for travelling etc. It’s not easy! I think there are some knitting and crochet groups on lemmy but idk if they’re active
I’ve been planning my next tattoo which will be in a year. I’ve really been having fun planning what to do with it! I’m going for a post apocalyptic sleeve on my thigh, mixture or 28 days later, signs and a couple of books.
I’ve been kinda creative with the books I’ve read, I’ve switched from post apocalyptic fiction to a non fiction one. Takes me out my comfort zone!
If you’d be willing to share a mood board or preliminary sketches/ideas, I’m sure we’d love to see it. I love the motifs of books and apocalypse together. Something about how integral they become when everything else crumbles, and how sacred knowledge is really speaks to me. Idk if this makes sense but it always gives me a more alt style cottagecore vibes.
Thats a really good point, books are the only learning and entertainment people have when society crumbles. I deffo will share the mood board when it takes shape! So far I’ve got loads of pictures trying to whittle it down.
