Wondering how much of the Lemmy user base wouldn’t use an adblocker. If you do use one what other blocking do you use to circumvent data collection, YouTube and reddit front ends and things alike?
, I got friends who would rather watch a 30s ad in front of every video they watch instead of taking the 30s to install an adblocker because its too much of a hassle and takes too much time.
And when i offer to install it for them they are actively fighting against it because appearently its no that bad.
My mom uses Edge, told me not to block Facebook ads and clicks on most of the clickbait articles on her MSN home page. It’s like she WANTS them to collect as much data to sell and spy on her as much as possible 🤦
If she really clicks on everything, then they have probably not much use of her data as it’s not specific enough. Check out this article about AdNauseam. This is an addon that does something pretty much identical to what your mom does, but automatically obviously.
If you do use one what other blocking do you productively use to circumvent data collection, YouTube and reddit front ends and things alike?
I use an ad blocker, and in addition also use Pi-hole for network-wide domain based tracker blocking. I use tailscale to use this on my phone, but also have Tracker Control (the real version installed from F-Droid) to do something similar if for some reason I need to disable Tailscale (only one can be used at once, as they both use the VPN method).
How easy was the Pi-hole setup? I was considering one for my family network as well.
I assume you put it between the router and firewall such as =ISP=Router=PiHole=Firewall=all the other devices. Is it based there the best choice? And does it filter YY adds as well?
A friend of mine exclusively uses NoScript. No Adblock. Just NoScript. I haven’t gotten an answer to why to this day.
Using the web without watching the ads is like going to the store without paying. People who use adblockers are actively destroying online based buisnesses and have already made the internet worse for all users. Like for example free news websties used to exist because they could ern money using ads.
I once read somewhere in the internet, that only 2 - 3 % of all users use an ad blocker. I don’t know if the numbers are correct, but most people I see in real life seem to be not bothered by ads.
At my workplace (Windows enviroment) I use firefox and the first thing I did was to set up ublock origin, along with a cookie decline add-on. I installed Firefox and an ad blocker on my collegues computers as well. Unfortunately they use Edge. The work phone that got me handed is an I-Phone. I installed Ka-Block! (browser is Safari) on it and despite there are no settings to be configured, it seems to work and block at least ads.
People tend not to see ads as a nuisance, because they are used to them when they are exposed to them over television. And since TV ads are way longer, online ads are no big deal to many people, becaus i’t “just one short ad”, instead a 10 minute block on TV.
