The only reason I could possibly imagine people like light mode is if they work in bright environments or use an e-ink monitor. Otherwise your eyes would be on fire quickly.
I prefer it to save energy. A white screen convinces me earlier that the brightness is set way too high, so I in turn dial it down, my main monitor or laptop is usually just at 10% brightness even in the middle of the day and gets turned town to 0% once the surroundings get dark.
Also I feel like it is much nicer to read than white on black text
