  • What a great article!!

So, I’m a huge Game Boy fan. I’d heard about how good Puyo Puyo is, so I got a Japanese copy of Puyo Puyo Tsu. From what I can tell it’s a great port. But I struggled so much getting into it! And then I read your comment…

Puyo Puyo Tsu is hard. It’s really damn hard. I’ve witnessed many new players struggle with even basic 3- and 4-chains, nevermind making the real big chains the game mode demands of you. And unlike Tetris where casual players do not need to know fancy T-Spin setups just to get started and play, you really can’t get far at all in Puyo Puyo Tsu without at least some understanding of chaining fundamentals.

…and I feel justified. 😅 What do you recommend is a good way for a new player to get into the game? Something to read, a video, or something else?

  • This article is strange… The author uses “being able to open Microsoft Office documents” as a common example of what an OS that claims to be easy to use should be able to do. Then says…

When people download Ubuntu 23.04 they get an OS that can do everything Windows 95 did - with 23.10 they don’t

No default installation of Microsoft Windows EVER opened Microsoft Office documents. If this was a simple oversight in the write-up it’d be fine, but the point is hammered over and over again.

I don’t have an opinion about Ubuntu including or not including more software in the default installation (my guess is it became too big to fit on a DVD?) but this article failed to make it’s point to me by making a comparison to Windows that isn’t true.

    Also…

the world’s most popular desktop Linux operating system (that’s Ubuntu, for those of you playing dumb)

Is this supposed to be a cocky joke? I can’t tell. What metric of “most popular” is the author using?

  • The comments are so vague as to be useless.

Windows. Everything is straight forward and I can still make some custom or niche stuff work.

I can say the same thing about Linux.

I don’t like Linux, because a lot of programs don’t work, and I don’t want to create my own 3D application or DAW from scratch.

This sounds like a 2005 opinion. There is professional grade software on Linux (for example Pixar RenderMan). If there is a specific application a person needs that is Windows only (and there are many) that’s fine, but suggesting the need write your own application for Linux from scratch is ridiculous.

As for “a lot of programs don’t work”, I have no clue what that’s supposed to mean… XD

  • Fun question! Here’s my thoughts. They’re all for the original Gameboy, because that’s my jam. :D

    • Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge - Action sidescroller, outstanding music, outstanding graphics, all original game for the Gameboy. Konami did an incredible job polishing this game, every corner of it is just so refined, from the enemy placement to the difficulty to the “translucent” cloud special effects. Every time I pick it up I can’t put it down. I consider it one of the best slow-paced action sidescrollers ever made, and better than many later Castlevania games.
    • Catrap - Puzzle game, with rewind feature. It’s a port of an older game but with cuter graphics. Try a stage as many times as you want… All stages are available to play the moment you turn on the game… This game holds up strong against any modern turn based puzzle game such as Baba is You.
    • Donkey Kong (94) - Action platformer. An original game, 100 stages, TONS of moves for Mario, tons of puzzle elements, very polished.
    • Kirby’s Dream Land - Every Kirby game for Gameboy is of the highest quality and a lot of fun to play. The first game in the series is unique in that Kirby does NOT have the ability to copy enemies powers, only suck up, eat, or spit out enemies as projectiles. And I haaaate copying abilities. It can be kind of fun to do but it is always easier to just stick to the sucking / eating ability, even in the most recent Kirby games. I know it’s an unpopular opinion, but copying abilities is a gimmick that makes the games harder and less fun.
    • Ninja Gaiden Shadow - Action platformer. This is not a port of an NES Ninja Gaiden game. This also is not a port of the game that it’s actually based on, Shadow of the Ninja. This is an original game. It’s not crazy hard, it’s just a fun challenge. The music, graphics, and gameplay are polished to perfection.
    • Tetris - The best version of all time. ;)
    • Tetris Blast - Tetris but with bombs. I think this is a Gameboy exclusive. It’s just a simple concept, easy to pickup and play, addictive, and is a lot of fun.
