Hi!

Just migrated from Homey, after Athom was sold to LG.

I’m currently having a blast getting my devices set up to Home Assistant, back after almost 10 years with Homey.

The one thing that I know is going to be different is the “Away” feature, as I guess Home Assistant will have to be able to be reached outside to update this status.

I love the idea of not making it available. I’m also very pleased to see that multiple of my devices support local API access via Home Assistant, and mostly easy to set up.

So my thought was that if I really needed to access Home Assistant, I’d just use “Teleport” on my Unifi setup, which I believe is their own Wireguard setup.

But what about the normal daily features, like “away” and “at home” statuses, or push-notifications etc. Do I have to have full online access in to my Home Assistant, either through the Cloud subscription, or (for me) more interestingly a free alternative? I like to support Nabu Casa, but I’d rather do that by purchasing their products (waiting for the Z-wave dongle!) and by donations rather than a subscription.

So in short; Is there a simpler connection possibility for just the phone statuses and push-notifications, where I don’t have to fully expose my Home Assistant installation for the world?
