In this instance, it really is a WAF, but that’s irrelevant.

As is common in the US, my wife enjoys a cup of coffee (or 5) in the morning. I never got into coffee. I’ll admit I’m the weird one on this.

We have a very dumb drip coffee maker plugged into a Zigbee switch. Most evenings/when I remember I’ll prep coffee for her, and she’ll start the coffee in the morning from her phone or via the Echo.

The first automation I added was one to turn the coffee off after it had been on for 3 hours. While appreciated, this didn’t dramatically improve the experience for my wife.

In the past, there were some instances where she thought I’d prepped the coffee, and turned it on from the bed, but it was dry. In order to combat that, I added a “Coffee Prepped” helper (associated with an NFC tag), and a couple of automations to prevent that from happening. It would send a notification to her phone if she started the coffee but it wasn’t prepped, and turn the coffee maker back off. This was an improvement because she’d now know if the coffee wasn’t ready, wouldn’t run the machine dry, and would know she needed to prep it herself.

The real game changer happened recently when I had a stroke of inspiration. Now, when I mark the coffee maker as prepped, her phone gets an actionable notification that allows her to turn the coffee maker on. I set it up while she was sleeping, and she said “OooOOOooh” when she saw it in the morning. She loved it. She’s raved about it several times in the past couple of days already.

HA is great, especially when interactions with it are really seamless (like this one).
