Overdrawn At The Memory Bank. Raul Julia plays a average citizen who decides to take a mini-vacation by downloading his mind into the body of an ape. Complications arise when his memory is ‘lost’ in the system and he experiences a whole new version of reality.
Based on a story by John Varley
Saw this recently because of MST3K.
Between this, Adams Family and Street Fighter, I kinda get the sense that Raul Julia was like Bruce Campbell in that he only took on super fun, and goofy roles in not-so-great movies because he just liked having fun and didn’t care about being a big star or making hella money.
It’s my understanding that he cared more about stage acting than films, but he needed to pay the bills.
He was starred a Broadway production of Dracula and was apparently incredible. I would have loved to have seen it. Edward Gorey designed the sets.
Edit: also, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is a genuinely terrific film.

I haven’t seen it. Yet. I will soon, now, though.
Ooh. I just realized that I replied to the wrong person in my edit, which is why my “Edit: also, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Kiss of the Spider Woman, which is a genuinely terrific film.” made no sense to you.
lol I just assumed it’s because I showed interest in Raul Julia.
You should. It’s an amazing film. It deservedly won an Oscar for William Hurt and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Director. Julia deserved a nom too, but it had to be either Hurt or Julia since they had mostly equal screen time.
Street fighter was for his son who was a fan of the game. Of course, this was also while he was battling cancer and it became his last role. Incredible scene chewery.
You are slightly off on that. It was his last big screen role, but this was his last role:

He was dying while making it and died of a stroke soon after it was finished. I admit, I have never seen it.
I didn’t see the MST3K version; but from the YouTube description I saw they cut a lot out.
The story [and John Varley’s stories in general] is worth a read.
Try Raul in “Moon Over Parador” and “The Gumball Rally.” He almost never got the top billings he deserved.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention Kiss of the Spider Woman (unless you’re not familiar with it).
Mom… my nuts?
Nobody tell the Ferengi about crypto-latinum.
I think the Ferengi would be happy to sell crypto-latinum, but feel like they’d never use it themselves.
