That wasn’t a K-9, that was a badly trained dog disguised as a K-9. When I heard that they even allow these dogs in schools, while I know how much training and oversight goes into German police dog training and despite that no one would see it safe to have such a dog in a school… scary. K9 isn’t done professionally in the US, neither in police or military. These dogs get abused, the handlers are in danger and everyone else that will be in contact with these dogs, animals or humans.

I am not shocked that the handler had no other means than to tase their own dog.

Great video, long but worth it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq2GrVUf3Yg

In Germany there is an intensive vetting process and only dogs who master that get at one year old to become police dogs. Then they train a full year with their handler while not being actually police dogs. The handler has a second already trained dog for work and trains his new dog that will replace the older one who can retire (not getting killed but given to families who are used to have such a dog) as part of his job, while constantly monitored and trained by a person who does nothing else than train police dog trainers and can immediately intervene if something does not work out between the dog and the handler. Dog and handler have to proof they are a good team in yearly testings for as long as the dog isn’t retired.

In the US police buys dogs and the next day use them with handlers that have no idea how the dog was trained and have basically no real training themselves and there is no oversight. It is giving a weapon to someone who does not know where the trigger is and how to turn safety on. Violence from handlers against the dogs they can not handle is normalized. Handlers getting bitten too. If a police dog bites a German polivce officer / somone it should not have bitten, everything gets questioned, the breeder, the dog, the actions of the handler, their trainer, the whole K-9 section. It’s a huge thing. Watching the video and listening to how this works in the US makes you shiver.
